- vacuolar myelopathy
- loss of myelin and spongy degeneration of the spinal cord with microscopic vacuolation, similar to that of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord, caused by infection with human immunodeficiency virus. Symptoms include spastic paraparesis, sensory ataxia in the lower limbs, and unsteadiness of gait.
