- mu·co·cyst (muґko-sist) [muco- + cyst] any of the paracrystalline, saccular or rod-shaped, subpellicular cystic organelles seen in certain ciliate protozoa, which contain a mucoid material that is expelled through a pore in the pellicle; its function is uncertain but it may be involved in the formation of cysts or protective coverings.
