meningitis due to any of various viruses, such as the coxsackieviruses, mumps virus, or the virus of lymphocytic choriomeningitis; characteristics include malaise, fever, headache, stiffness of neck and back, nausea, and cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis (principally lymphocytic); it usually has a short uncomplicated course.
