Mehl·nдhr·scha·den (māl″nār-shahґdən) [Ger.] a nutritional deficiency syndrome similar to kwashiorkor, due to inadequate protein intake and overabundance of carbohydrate; the clinical characteristics include growth failure, preservation of subcutaneous fat with wasting of muscle, edema, and psychomotor abnormalities.
