mediastinum medium
[TA] middle mediastinum: the division of the mediastinum containing the heart enclosed in its pericardium, the ascending aorta, the superior vena cava, the bifurcation of the trachea into bronchi, the proximal portions of the pulmonary arteries and veins, the phrenic nerves, and the arch of the azygos vein. Called also middle mediastinal cavity.
