assortative mating
assortive mating nonrandom mating in which choice of a mate is influenced by phenotype. Positive assortative mating occurs when phenotypically similar mates are chosen, e.g., tall men and tall women; negative assortative mating occurs when phenotypically dissimilar mates are chosen, e.g., tall men and short women. Such mating can affect Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (q.v.) in a population.
