pressure-volume loops

pressure-volume loops
graphic representations of the pressure within cardiac ventricles as a function of their volumes, recorded over the course of the cardiac cycle under various conditions, such as increased preload or afterload, and used to assess cardiac contractility.

Pressure-volume loops comparing a control state (solid line) and the addition of a positive inotropic agent (dotted line), assuming constant stroke volume. Beginning with A, end-diastole, the period from A to B represents isovolumetric left ventricular contraction. Ejection occurs from B, opening of the aortic valve to C, end-systole. The period from C to D, opening of the mitral valve, represents isovolumetric relaxation, and is followed by ventricular filling in the period from D to A.
