acute suppurative labyrinthitis
labyrinthitis in which pus enters the labyrinth, usually either through a fistula after infection of the middle ear (tympanogenic labyrinthitis) or through temporal bone erosion from meningitis (meningogenic labyrinthitis). Occasionally it may be the result of septicemia (hematogenic labyrinthitis). It results in severe and often permanent vertigo and hearing loss. Called also bacterial l. and purulent l.
