hy·droxy·pro·pyl cel·lu·lose (hi-drok″se-proґpəl selґu-lōs) [NF] a partially substituted, water-soluble cellulose ether, which may contain suitable anticaking agents; used as a pharmaceutic aid (emulsifying, thickening, and suspending agent, and tablet excipient, binder, and coating agent) and as an ophthalmic protectant and lubricant in the treatment of dry eye, applied topically.
