3-hy·droxy-3-meth·yl·glu·ta·ryl (hi-drok″se-meth″əl-glooґtə-rəl) a radical of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaric acid; the thioester it forms with coenzyme A, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA, is an intermediate in the catabolism of leucine and in the synthesis of ketone bodies and cholesterol.
