H+-transporting ATP synthase
- H+-transporting ATP synthase
- H+-trans·port·ing ATP syn·thase (trans-portґing sinґthās) [EC 3.6.3.14] an enzyme complex of the mitochondrial membrane that catalyzes the phosphorylation of ADP to form ATP. The energy for the synthesis of ATP is produced at three sites in the electron transport chain (see illustration under chain) and oxidative phosphorylation and electron transport are coupled via translocation of protons across the mitochondrial membrane. When removed from the membrane, the enzyme acts as an ATPase. Called also ATP synthase, H+-ATPase, and mitochondrial ATPase. In official nomenclature, the preferred name is now H+-transporting two-sector ATPase.
