constitutive heterochromatin

constitutive heterochromatin
the chromatin in regions of the chromosomes that are invariably heterochromatic, located mainly to both sides of the centromeres and to the telomeres; it contains highly repetitive sequences of DNA that are genetically inactive, and may serve as a structural element of the chromosome. See also C banding, under banding.
