human herpesvirus 1
a virus of the genus Simplexvirus that is an etiologic agent of herpes simplex and causes predominantly non-genital infections. Primary infection usually occurs in early childhood and is often asymptomatic, although gingivostomatitis and pharyngitis may occur. The virus can pass along nerves and remain latent in ganglia, from which it may be reactivated. Called also herpes simplex virus 1. See Plate 49.
