- glu·ta·mate for·mim·i·no·trans·fer·ase (glooґtə-māt for-mim″ĭ-no-transґfər-ās) [EC 2.1.2.5] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the transfer of a formimino group from formiminoglutamate to tetrahydrofolate, forming 5-formiminotetrahydrofolate. The reaction is a step in the degradation of histidine. The enzyme is bifunctional; it also contains a catalytic site with formiminotetrahydrofolate cyclodeaminase (q.v.) activity. Urinary excretion of formiminoglutamate and mental retardation have been associated with decreased enzyme activity, resulting from either a genetic disorder or a deficiency of tetrahydrofolate. Called also formiminotransferase.
