- glu·cose-6-phos·phate isom·er·ase (glooґkos fosґfāt i-somґər-ās) [EC 5.3.1.9] an enzyme of the isomerase class that catalyzes the interconversion glucose 6-phosphate = fructose 6-phosphate. The forward reaction is a step in the Embden-Meyerhof pathway (see illustration under pathway), and the reverse is a step in gluconeogenesis. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, results in hemolytic anemia. Called also phosphoglucose isomerase. The enzyme also has the effect of promoting motility and metastasis in cancer cells, and is increased in certain types of cancer; in that case it has been called autocrine motility factor.
