[Sonic Hedgehog; from the animated character] a human gene homologous to the Drosophila hedgehog gene, which is required for embryonic segmentation; it encodes a dosage-sensitive signaling molecule that induces and organizes development of cells and tissues, including the brain and spinal cord and the limb buds.
