- a superinfection complicating long-term systemic antibiotic treatment of acne vulgaris, particularly with tetracyclines, usually caused by species of Enterobacter, Klebsiella, or Proteus. Infection with the first two species is manifested by a superficial pustular eruption, often around the nares; Proteus infections are characterized by deep nodular cysts, usually on the back.
