A sesquiterpene antimalarial and antischistosomal drug derived from Artemisia annua; a. is a potent and rapidly acting blood schizontocide that has been reported to be very useful in the treatment of cerebral malaria; active against chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum and chloroquine-sensitive P. falciparum and P. vivax.

ar·te·mis·i·nin (ahr″tə-misґĭ-nin) 1. an antimalarial lactone derived from Artemisia annua, effective against schizonts of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum. Artemisinin and its derivatives are rapid-acting but are subject to recrudescence and are used in combination with other, longer-acting antimalarials. 2. any of the antimalarial drugs derived from this compound.
