transitional epithelium

transitional epithelium
a type of epithelium formerly thought to represent a transitional form between stratified squamous and columnar epithelium, found characteristically in the mucous membrane of the excretory passages of the urinary system. In the contracted condition it consists of many cell layers, whereas in the stretched condition usually only two layers can be distinguished.
