interstitial emphysema
escape of air into the connective tissue of the lung, mediastinum (see pneumomediastinum), or subcutaneous tissue (see subcutaneous e.); it results from a tear or rupture of the respiratory passages or alveoli, which may occur in association with bronchiolar obstruction, positive pressure ventilation, or a penetrating wound of the chest wall or lung.
