left ventricular assist device
(LVAD) a ventricular assist device capable of augmenting left ventricular function; its pump has an afferent conduit attached to the left atrium or left ventricular apex and an efferent conduit attached to the ascending aorta. Implanted systems are sometimes called left ventricular assist systems. Cf. biventricular assist d. and right ventricular assist d.
