alcohol withdrawal delirium
[DSM-IV] delirium caused by cessation or reduction in alcohol consumption, typically in alcoholics with 10 years or more of heavy drinking. Clinical manifestations include potentially life-threatening autonomic hyperactivity, such as tachycardia, sweating, and hypertension; a coarse, irregular tremor, and delusions, vivid hallucinations; and wild, agitated behavior. Seizures are possible. The onset is usually 2 or 3 days after cessation of drinking; the delirium and other withdrawal symptoms usually resolve in 3 or 4 days. Called also d. tremens.
