cytochrome P-450
cytochrome P450 trivial name (P for pigment, 450 nm for the absorption maximum of the carbon monoxide derivative) for a cytochrome occurring in most tissues and containing a protoheme IX prosthetic group. It serves as the oxygenating catalyst in a wide variety of reactions catalyzed by monooxygenases, e.g., hydroxylation of steroid hormones and oxidations involved in the detoxification of many drugs; cytochrome P-450 activates molecular oxygen for an attack on the substrate.
