severe conjunctivitis marked by the presence of a membrane on the inner surface of the lids formed by the profuse fibrinous exudation from the cul-de-sac, which on attempted removal leaves a raw, bleeding surface; it is caused by various bacteria, including Corynebacterium diphtheriae, streptococci, gonococci, and pneumococci.
