the complete membrane attack complex (cytolytic agent) of the complement system, generated by addition of multiple molecules of C9 to C5b,6,7,8; this complex has a hydrophilic center that allows the rapid passage of water and ions through the cell membrane, causing osmotic lysis of the cell. Sometimes abbreviated C5b–9 or C5b–9n.
