cisterna cerebellomedullaris posterior
[TA] posterior cerebellomedullary cistern: the enlarged subarachnoid space between the inferior surface of the cerebellum and the posterior surface of the medulla oblongata, and continuous below with the spinal subarachnoid space. It can be tapped by means of a needle inserted through the posterior atlanto-occipital membrane (cisternal puncture). Called also c. magna [TA alternative] and great or posterior cistern.
