third-generation cephalosporin
any of a group of β-lactamase–resistant cephalosporins that are more active against gram-negative organisms but less active against gram-positive organisms than are second-generation agents; it includes cefixime, cefoperazone, cefotaxime, cefpodoxime, ceftazidime, ceftizoxime, and ceftriaxone.
