second-generation cephalosporin
- second-generation cephalosporin
- any of a group containing cephalosporins that have greater resistance to β-lactamases and so are more active against gram-negative organisms, but are slightly less active against gram-positive organisms than are first-generation agents; it includes cefaclor, cefamandole, cefonicid, cefotetan, cefoxitin, cefprozil, ceftibuten, and cefuroxime. Cephamycins are usually classified as second-generation cephalosporins but have somewhat greater activity against anaerobes.
