ca·the·li·ci·din (kə-the″lĭ-siґdin) any of a family of mammalian cationic peptides that are expressed by leukocytes and epithelial cells and have a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity, acting both directly and as multifunctional immunomodulators. Humans have a single cathelicidin; overexpression results in rosacea.
