enterochromaffin-like cell carcinoid a small, circumscribed, often polypoid tumor of the gastric fundus, consisting of enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells and believed to be secondary to hypergastrinemia, which stimulates the proliferation of ECL cells; multiple tumors are usually present. Tumors may be classified into three types: Type I, associated with atrophic gastritis; Type II, associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia, type I; and Type III, which is sporadic.
