caput medusae

caput medusae
dilated cutaneous veins around the umbilicus, seen mainly in the newborn and in patients suffering from cirrhosis; see also Cruveilhier-Bumgarten syndrome. It is named for the resemblance of the veins to the head of the snake-haired Greek monster Medusa. Called also cirsomphalos and medusa head.
