γ-bu·ty·ro·lac·tone (bu″tə-ro-lakґtōn) a prodrug of γ-hydroxybutyric acid, used as an industrial solvent; when consumed it has sedative and depressant qualities similar to those of γ-hydroxybutyric acid, so that it is a drug of abuse.
