lamellar body

lamellar body
one of the spherical granules that are formed in the upper spinous and granular layers of the skin, migrate into the cytoplasm, and then fuse with the plasma membrane to discharge their contents (bipolar phospholipids, glycoproteins, and acid phosphates) into the interior of the cell. The extruded material is thought to function as a barrier to penetration by foreign substances. Called also keratinosome and lamellar granule.
