- a polychromatic mixture of several blue cationic thiazine dyes (including azures A, B, and C) and at least one uncharged dye, methylene violet Bernthsen; made by prolonged boiling of aqueous solutions of methylene blue, usually with alkali and sometimes with an oxidizing agent. It is commonly used as the cationic component of thiazine-eosinate stains.
