neuropathic arthropathy

neuropathic arthropathy
chronic progressive degeneration of the stress-bearing portion of a joint, with bizarre hypertrophic changes at the periphery; it is usually a complication of a neurologic disorder such as tabes dorsalis, syringomyelia, or diabetic neuropathy. Loss of sensation leads to relaxation of supporting structures and chronic instability of the joint. Called also Charcot a., neurogenic a., Charcot disease or joint, and neuropathic arthritis.
