lupus anticoagulant

lupus anticoagulant
a circulating anticoagulant that inhibits the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, found in 5–10 per cent of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, but also seen in other disorders. Although associated with a prolonged partial thromboplastin time, it rarely causes abnormal bleeding and, paradoxically, increases the risk of thromboembolism. Called also lupus inhibitor.
