cutaneous anthrax

cutaneous anthrax
the most common type of anthrax in humans, due to inoculation of Bacillus anthracis into superficial wounds or abrasions. It begins with a small, painless, pruritic papular lesion that may have satellite lesions and enlarges, ulcerates, and becomes crusted with a black eschar; this is surrounded by spreading edema (malignant edema) and induration. The eschar may either heal or progress to a systemic condition, sometimes involving the meninges, accompanied by high fever and severe toxemia.
