thalamic syndrome
a condition resulting from damage to the thalamus, often by a stroke, that is characterized by severe intractable pain and hypersensitivity in the area of the body served by the damaged brain region. It is extremely resistant to treatment.

thalamic pain syndrome a syndrome caused by a lesion in the thalamus and characterized by contralateral hemianesthesia; some later develop persistent severe pain and choreoathetoid movements on the affected side, mild hemiataxia, and astereognosis. Called also Dejerine-Roussy s. and thalamic hyperesthetic anesthesia.
