n.
a severe and itchy inflammation of the skin occurring in people continuously subjected to the bites of the sandfly Phlebotomus papatasii. The incidence of this allergic skin reaction, prevalent in the Middle East, may be checked by controlling the numbers of sandflies.

ha·rara (hə-rarґə) [Ar. al harara heat] 1. an allergic skin reaction caused by bites of the sand fly Phlebotomus papatasi in the Middle East; characteristics include urticarial and inflammatory papules and blisters. After the initial exposure, most persons develop immunity in time. Called also urticaria multiformis endemica. 2. popular name for any of various other skin eruptions.
