gestational diabetes mellitus

gestational diabetes mellitus
diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Only by observing what happens at the end of the pregnancy can it be decided whether or not the condition is persistent. Gestational diabetes is routinely screened for at antenatal appointments; it is important to diagnose the condition, as uncontrolled blood sugars have an adverse effect on the fetus as well as the mother. It often recurs in subsequent pregnancies and affected women in whom it later disappears have a higher risk than others of developing type 2 diabetes during their lifetime. It is treated like standard diabetes, with around 30% of affected women needing insulin.
