Office for National Statistics

(in Britain) an executive agency of the Treasury that was formed in 1996 from a merger between the Central Statistical Office and the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (
OPCS). It is responsible for the compilation and publication of statistics relating to national and local populations, including their social and economic situation and contribution to the economy, and the demographic patterns of births, marriages, and deaths (including the medical cause of death). The ONS will continue the work of the former OPCS in organizing a
national census at ten-yearly intervals based on the actual presence of individuals in a house or institution on a designated night (known as a
de facto census). This contrasts with the approach in the US, where enumeration is based on official address (
de jure census).
