stran·gles (strangґgəlz) 1. in horses, an infectious disease characterized by a mucopurulent inflammation of the respiratory mucous membrane, with lymph node abscesses, and caused by Streptococcus equi. Called also equine or horse distemper. 2. in pigs, infection of the lymph nodes of the neck and pharynx with heavily encapsulated abscesses.
