* * *
(RSV) any of a group of viruses belonging to the genus Pneumovirus, isolated originally from chimpanzees with coryza. In humans, they cause respiratory disease that is particularly severe in infants, in whom it causes bronchiolitis (q.v.) and sometimes pneumonia. Other viruses (bovine respiratory syncytial virus) cause respiratory disease in cattle. In tissue RSV causes syncytium formation. RSV is separable into two groups (A and B) on the basis of the antigenic structure of the G protein and into subgroups within the two groups.
