1) a hallucinogenic drug containing mescaline that is derived from peyote buttons and used esp. in the religious ceremonies of some American Indian peoples
2) a small spineless cactus of the genus Lophophora (L. williamsii) of the southwestern U.S. and Mexico having rounded stems covered with jointed tubercules called also mescal

pey·o·te (pa-yoґta) [Sp., from Nahuatl peyotl] 1. any of several Mexican cacti of the genus Lophophora, especially L. williamsii or mescal. 2. a hallucinogenic substance whose active principle is mescaline, found in the flowering heads of Lophophora williamsii and consumed in various North American Indian cultures as part of religious ceremonies. Called also peyotl.
