(LSD) a synthetic ergot alkaloid with psychotomimetic properties and both sympathomimetic and serotoninergic blocking effects; it counteracts barbiturates and is counteracted by suppressants like chlorpromazine. Objective effects include ataxia, fever, hyperreflexia, mydriasis, piloerection, tremor, and sometimes nausea and vomiting. Subjective effects include visual perception disorders and varying degrees of depersonalization, synesthesia, delusions, hallucinations, distortions of thought, sense, time, mood, and body image (which may be extreme). Anxiety may develop into acute panic reactions, and a persistent toxic psychotic state may result. Physical or psychological dependence is rare. Called also lysergide.
