(HCM) a condition, often of autosomal dominant inheritance, marked by ventricular hypertrophy, particularly of the left ventricle and often involving the interventricular septum, with diastolic dysfunction manifest as impaired ventricular filling; it is sometimes the cause of sudden cardiac death in athletes.
