high-per·for·mance liquid chromatography -pə(r)-'fȯr-mən(t)s- n liquid chromatography in which the degree of separation is increased by forcing a solvent under pressure through a densely packed adsorbent
abbr. HPLC called also high-pressure liquid chromatography

high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) an automated type of chromatography in which the mobile phase is a liquid, which is forced under high pressure through a column packed with a sorbent. As in gas chromatography, a detector at the end of the column coupled to a chart recorder graphs the sample efflux. Various separation methods, including adsorption, gel filtration, ion exchange, and partition, are used.
