Del·phin·i·um (del-finґe-əm) [L.] a genus of plants of the family Ranunculaceae, including the larkspurs and delphinium, many of which contain delphinine and other alkaloids that are common causes of poisoning (see larkspur poisoning, under poisoning). D. ajaґcis and D. consoґlida have poisonous seeds that are diuretic and emmenagogue. D. staphisaґgria is the lousewort or stavesacre, a poisonous species whose seeds, called staphisagria, were formerly used medicinally.
