Cas·ta·nea (kas-taґne-ə) [L., from Gr. kastanea] the chestnuts, a genus of trees of the family Fagaceae. C. dentaґta (Marsh.) Borkh. is the American chestnut, which has an edible nut. Its wood and leaves contain tannin, and it has been used as an astringent and in pertussis. Its leaves and buds may be poisonous to livestock if consumed in large quantities.
