bite plate n a removable usu. plastic dental appliance used in orthodontics and prosthodontics to assist in therapy or diagnosis: as
a) a U-shaped device worn in the upper or lower jaw and used esp. to reposition the jaw or prevent bruxism by covering the occlusal surfaces of the teeth so that they cannot be brought into contact
b) retainer (2)

a removable orthodontic appliance, generally made of acrylic resin, that makes use of adhesion to the palate to provide part of the anchorage needed for the desired tooth movement; used to stimulate eruption of the posterior teeth and to decrease the amount of anterior overbite.
